February 18th marked the beginning of the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Pig. Celebrations will last for the next 15 days. We had a 4-day weekend and we just stayed around Singapore enjoying some of the local events.
We visited Chinatown the weekend before the New Year. Shops were filled with red and gold decorations and souveniers.
Streets were packed, and at times we had to literally push our way through the crowds.
People were buying goodies of all kinds.
Being the Year of the Pig, the most popular booth was selling pork of every imaginable variety.
Lion and dragon dances can be seen all over the city, but it was very exciting to have them arrive at our complex last Tuesday morning.
First they did the lion dance.
Then everyone enjoyed lots of treats!
And it ended with the dragon dance around our pool.
So spectacular!
On the second weekend of the New Year, we went Friday night to see Singapore's big New Year's parade called the Chingay Parade. Thousands of people crowded the streets to watch the thousands of people in the parade.
Truly another amazing Asian celebration!
